Na tym kawału "The Great Debate" James brzmi po prostu tragicznie.

Mangini ma trudne zadanie, bo Portnoya nie zastąpi, a dla wielu (w tym dla mnie, mimo tego, że często mnie wkurzał) MP był najbardziej lubianym członkiem zespołu. Niby daje radę, ale jednak ja jestem sceptycznie nastawiony (trochę też do całego zespołu - na nowej płycie okaże się, czy Portnoy nie miał racji, mówiąc, że zespół potrzebuje przerwy - ja nie miałbym nic przeciwko temu, żeby poczekać ze 4 lata na nową płytę, która byłaby na poziomie ich najlepszych nagrań)

Jako "stary" ;-) fan Dream Theater muszê stwierdziæ, ¿e co¶ siê zaciê³o je¶li chodzi o komponowanie w tym zespole ju¿ od paru ³adnych lat. Nowy kawa³ek - niez³y, no ale w³a¶nie niez³y to trochê za ma³o ¿ebym móg³ go s³uchaæ bez przerwy. Szczerze mówi±c po 3 przes³uchaniach zacz±³ mnie nudziæ. Pocz±tek obiecywa³ wiele, ale potem kilka patentów z ka¿dej p³yty, klawisze jakie¶ takie bez pomys³u. Schemat podobny do kilku piosenek z ostatnich albumów. Spokojne intro - ciê¿ki riff - potem wa³owanie podobnych motywów kilka razy i nie ratuje tego nawet wstawka na fortepianie Rudessa. Czemu oni tak kombinuj± i tworz± takie kolosy po 10 minut? Zamiast tego mo¿na zrobiæ krótsze, ale ciekawsze piosenki np. jak na moim ulubionym "Awake". No, ale có¿. Mog± robiæ co chc±, p³ytê i tak kupiê ¿eby tradycji sta³o siê zado¶æ. My¶lê, ¿e na tyle utworów trafi siê jaka¶ pere³ka.

So it was kind of a very conscious effort to make sure that we were touching upon some of the really classic moments in our history that really spoke loudly to us, saying „you know, that was cool when we did something like that, or when we had that kind of vibe or that direction musically going. - On the Backs of Angels sounds very much like classic Dream Theater, especially since it doesn’t sound like any other bands. There are no bits that sound like Metallica or Muse, for example. Many people complain about these things - does this ever get discussed within the band?
No, we don’t sit down and go „we can’t sound like Muse, we can’t sound like…“ – we don’t do that. But I think that we’re all subconsciously thinking „Whatever we’re doing here, we gotta feel right about it – that it sounds like us, first and foremost”. And especially with this album, because we knew there was going to be a lot scrutiny, there was going to be a lot of room for skepticism. So we knew that the best thing we can do here is be true to ourselves, first and foremost – which we always have been –, but let’s bring it to another level. Let’s really push the envelope here of who and what we are and really make it something that is undeniable, that it’s definitely who and what we’ve always been – but better.
